A multi-skilled Mace construction management team is working round the clock to deliver a 5 star resort complex on a remote island in the Indian Ocean for Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts group.

The Shangri-La Maldives resort and spa represents a major development for the economy of Addu Atoll, situated at the southern most tip of the Maldives, 430km south of the capital Male. The project has required Mace's highly regarded logistical management skills to bring in supplies and services to this extremely remote and isolated location.

The fully self contained 5-star development comprises more than 140 luxury villas located on the water and island itself. The Mace team faces unique challenges on almost every front as the island was undeveloped and totally uninhabited on arrival. All materials, plant and specialist equipment, from water treatment plant to furniture and hotel equipment, has been sourced from a global supply chain and shipped to the island.

The resulting development, Shangri-La's first in the Maldives, is environmentally friendly in accordance with the stringent requirements imposed by the Maldives government.

The multi-cultural 1,600 strong workforce originate from many countries resulting in numerous languages and religions and associated communication challenges.

Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts is a long-term client for Mace and we're proud to be able to deliver a paradise resort in the most basic of environments. The project is due for completion in mid-2008.
