Art of construction

Mace is very proud to have been appointed as construction manager for the next phase development of London's much-loved art gallery, Tate Modern.

The new development will create a spectacular new building adjoining Tate Modern to the south, on the foundation of the former power station's oil tanks. This will be Britain's most important new building for culture since the creation of the Royal National Theatre in 1976 and the British Library in 1998. The new building will increase Tate Modern's size by 60% adding approximately 21,000 square metres of new space.

Work is expected to start on site in mid 2009 and it is hoped that the new building will be completed in time for the London Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2012.

Deputy Director of Tate, Alex Beard, said: "We are delighted with the appointments to the Transforming Tate Modern project team. We have a world-class team in place and with the recent funding announcement from government, we are moving successfully into a new phase for the project."

A strong team
Mace is just one part of the overall design and construction team which includes renowned architects Herzog & de Meuron, Davis Langdon (cost consultants), Ramboll Whitbybird (structural and façade engineers), Max Fordham LLP (mechanical and electrical engineers), Cyril Sweett (CDM coordination), Gardiner & Theobald (project managers) and Vogt providing landscape architecture.
