At home with high speed

Mace was appointed as project manager and CDM coordinator on the new Ashford Rail Depot, home for 29 new high speed bullet trains for the UK domestic rail service. Due to enter service in December 2009, the new fleet will provide the Olympic ‘javelin' service from St Pancras station in central London to the 2012 Olympic site in Stratford, on the east of the city, taking just seven minutes to complete the journey.

As part of a successful HSBC Rail team, Mace was appointed to deliver the new Ashford rail depot which required considerable remodelling and construction of the following key elements:

  • New routine maintenance and overhaul building
  • Extensive replacement of the existing inspection shed
  • Substantial equipment/material stores
  • New staff accommodation
  • Improved berthing sidings

The project management/planning supervision role undertaken by Mace on this project included:

  • Fast track design and construction programme
  • Multiple staging to keep existing facilities fully operational throughout the construction period
  • Full financing of depot development
  • Long-term leasing

Completed on time in 2007, the handover was followed by an opening ceremony attended by the Rt. Hon. Ruth Kelly MP, secretary of state for transport and Mr Yoshiji Nogami, the Japanese Ambassador.
