Mace Sustain - Supporting women into construction
In 2007 Mace secured funding from the Learning Skills Council and the European Social Fund to deliver a Pan London project supporting women into construction sector opportunities.
Mace has long realised that our projects have the power to transform lives as well as spaces and social inclusion programmes are an increasingly key element to the way we deliver.
Mace Sustain is delivering the Construction Works project which supports women who wish to take advantage from construction sector opportunities. The sector needs to recruit more than 70,000 additional workers each year just to replace those retiring, and there are skills shortages in most trades and at managerial and supervisory levels so the programme is both timely and strategically beneficial for all involved.
To support this, the industry is renewing its commitment to equal opportunities through prioritising the employment and career development of women, and Construction Works has been funded through the LSC and ESF to provide a range of training and guidance. These public funding streams enable the project to offer all training free.
The project will provide:
- NVQ Level 3 - in any construction related subject, including trades, Site Supervision, and technical subjects, delivered primarily through On Site Assessment and Training.
- Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) - this CITB-Construction Skills-accredited card is required for access to many construction sites.
- Work placements - to afford woman a introduction to the industry.
- Employment - the project aims to support twenty women into sustained construction-sector work.
The project is restricted to unemployed women, self-employed women and those who work in companies with fewer than 250 employees. Provision will be tailored and timed to ensure accessibility and suitability to individuals needs.
