Upgrading cement works for Blue Circle, Nigeria
The Mace Group's valued skills in the industrial sector are the bedrock of our productive and long-term relationship with Lafarge (formerly Blue Circle) in Africa.
Mace worked with client Lafarge and WAPCo providing key people to both companies for the execution of the projects at Ewekoro. This involved the expansion of existing cement factories through the construction of a new kiln line (Line 4) and a number of ancillary projects. The Ewekoro Plant is delivering one million tonnes per year. A similar project was managed concurrently in Alexandria with a new kiln rated at 1.5 million tonnes.
Mace provided both project and construction management services to Blue Circle in support of its in-house teams. The scope involved process engineering and covered civil engineering, mechanical and electrical engineering. Ewekoro also required Mace to undertake some engineering duties on site.
The overall Ewekoro project area is approximately 5km by 1km in dense west African tropical jungle. Logistically this meant the Mace team had to develop innovative approaches to support its staff with procedures and systems during the construction, not to mention food for more than 2,000 site workers.
The new clinker production facility, from the raw material store to the clinker cooler, was built in the worked out section of the old plants quarry. This part of the project site was on the west side of the Lagos Abeokuta Highway and is 700m long and 250m wide.
Features:
- Clinker grinding and cement packing is on the east side of the highway comprising two three thousand hp cement mills and two packing machines loading directly to lorries or rail wagons
- A new cut and cover service tunnel connects the two sites
- A new bridge was erected over the highway to carry the clinker and pedestrian traffic
